Treasures Down Below

Dinosaur Valley Park in Texas is a spot which my husband and I have visited once before, but the river was far too high for us to dare to traverse on our previous visit. With the water level being much lower and the thunderous rapids being reduced to a nagging pull of the stream, we decided to river-walk.

River walking is far more exhausting than it may seem because it requires careful planning of foot placement, balance, and traction. One false step would result in a dangerous slip on moss covered rocks so the progress of walking upriver is slow. But for anyone with the patience and caution to plan their steps, river-walking is an excellent pass time and an excellent way to cool off on a hot summer day.

Walking along an isolated river can also have benefits for a treasure hunter such as myself. While walking along the banks I noticed a glimmer of light reflecting off of something metallic buried in the sand by the water. Upon closer examination, I discovered a gold ring with a bright green stone dangling from a gold chain. I was thrilled to make this discovery, and even more so when I found the engravings on both the ring and chain confirming they were indeed real gold.

With plans to return to the deeper areas of the river with diving masks and waterproof flashlights, we ended our day with a leisurely swim before calling it a day. This park has endless opportunities for fun which include diverse hiking trails, authentic dinosaur tracks, fossil hunting, river walking, as well as beautiful picnic areas and a gift shop. Dinosaur Valley Park has become a new favorite of ours and we plan to return in the fall to camp by the river in one of their several camp sites. Needless to say, if you have the chance to visit the park for yourself I would highly recommend it.
