Standing 135 feet high containing 38 billion gallons of water is the Saville Dam, also known as the Barkhamsted Reservoir in Connecticut. This man made body of water was created as a water source for the surrounding towns. The unique thing about this reservoir is that the low valley where it was built was the only suitable place in the region for the construction of the dam. However, in the bowl of the valley was town of Barkhamsted Hollow. The surrounding towns bought the land and the residents of Barkhamsted Hollow were relocated, but the buildings remained when the valley was flooded. From the top of the hillsides above the valley, during the early hours of morning when the sunrise is barely peaking over the distant mountains, the golden light of morning shines across the top of the water and illuminates the rooftops of the submerged buildings below the water.
When I visited this remarkable reservoir and stood from the top of the stone fortress-like walls to oversee the vast lake, I couldn't personally see the buildings below since the sun was already high in the sky. But the valley was lined with dense beautiful forests, the water glistened under the sunshine, and the dam itself was an incredible tribute to human ingenuity. This is a picturesque location with a fascinating history, which I would recommend experiencing for yourself.
