Anyone who knows me will tell you that I become giddy and begin to nerd out when it comes to all things pirate related. I study privateers, pirates, and treasure hunting voyages out of a deep fascination for that time period and the romanticism associated with the Elizabethan days of piracy. That is why when I was presented with the opportunity to attend the Pirate's Cove Dinner Theater in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina I hastily accepted. My grandparents, parents, and I were seated in a grand inner circle, presented with a feast fit for a king, and watched in silent anticipation as the lights dimmed.
What followed can only be described as "Cirque Du Soleil" with pirates, sprinkled of hints from Pirates of the Caribbean and the Princess Bride. Ribbon dancers, acrobats, show tunes, group dance numbers, sword fights, live animal performances, mermaids, sea monsters, and a ghostly pirate crew. These things and more dazzled us with bright costumes, beautiful music, fabulous acting, realistic fights, dangerous stunts, and a love story that would leave one breathless. My only regret is that I could not watch this again and again. It was far different from any movie I had seen. It was real people, doing very real and dangerous stunts, singing to live music and belting out their jolly shanties while dancing a jig aboard the wooden deck of a ship afloat in a vast murky pool centerstage. The experience was all together unforgettable, and I hope to some day have the opportunity to experience it all again. I cannot recommend this more strongly to anyone visiting the Myrtle Beach area.
