Many details of this exploration must unfortunately be left a mystery, since this location is not technically open to the public and many of the areas within were foreclosed due to dilapidation. But this building and several of the surrounding ones are connected together by underground tunnels were once the site of a hospital for the clinically insane. The underground tunnels were used by nurses and doctors to move from building to building easily in the extreme weather conditions. However, these tunnels were said to be used to imprison and torture misbehaved patients, so it is no wonder why they are claimed to be haunted. Most of the buildings are caved in and falling apart, but the ones still standing still house an uneasy presence about them.
Determined to explore this site for ourselves, myself and an unnamed companion drove out to the remote site of the institution. After exploring the grounds a bit, we found that one of the intact buildings had a low window that could be lifted and opened outward. We carefully crawled inside the window and braced for the steep drop down to the floor. The room was bare except for the sickly grey colored wallpaper peeling from the walls. A wooden staircase led upstairs to the second floor but we ignored it, convinced that it probably wouldn't hold our weight. The wooden floorboards creaked loudly in protest as we crossed a hall into a much larger pale blue colored room. The room was a putrid color and the overwhelming sense of desolation hung in the air. We searched desperately for any access to the tunnels but could not find them in this building, and we wondered if perhaps this could be a visiting and reception building, separate from the rest of the facility which would explain the lack of access to the tunnels since doctors and nurses would not need urgent access to this building.
Our explorations were halted when, peering outside through musty fogged windows, we noticed a car passing by several times as though aware of our presence. Deciding not to chance being caught, we made a hasty getaway. But in the hurry as I climbed back out the old window a piece of the metal fixture of the window caught my shorts and tore them all the way up the back. I ran the rest of the way back to the car with one arm pulling down the back of my shirt to hide my exposed underwear. Once clear of the site and the car which had been lingering by, we had a good laugh together. But it was only then that I realized I had dropped my equipment bag containing a flashlight, pencils, a blank notebook, and a few pieces of candy. We decided not to return for it in case we were being watched. So to this day, unless looters have claimed it, my bag still remains somewhere inside the ruins of the abandoned hospital for the clinically insane. It is unlikely that I will ever make a return to the site since I prefer my expeditions to be fully legal and straightforward. But it was undeniably fascinating and exhilarating to do a bit of exploring here. I only wish that I could share more details, but sadly I can say no more.
