Years ago I was in the Cadet Police Explorers working for the local police department as a volunteer to direct traffic, provide security for political meetings, and patrol town events such as fairs and parades. We would also have scenario practice days, weekly meetings, and police ride-alongs. One such officer which would take me on a ride along as often as he could was the proud partner of a narcotics trained K-9 unit dog named Falco. This German Shepard was a quiet and strong dog with a loyal nature. He was friendly to the officers and to the cadets, but indifferent to civilians. He was an excellent Narcotics seeker and a great personal defense partner. I had the honor of being able to watch him demonstrate his skills in take-down maneuvers, attacks, and drug sniffing. He was an extremely intelligent and agile dog with large attentive ears and big brownish reddish eyes.
My favorite memory of Falco was at a town fair when I was standing by the Falco's handler dressed in my best Class A uniform with my boots shined and my hair trimmed very short and tidy. A group of scantily dressed girls my age passed by me and one of them turned back, looked me up and down, and called me a terrible derogatory name based on my short hair and "masculine" appearance for being in uniform. I said nothing, but my canine companion leashed to the officer beside me began ferociously barking and lunged toward the girls, straining the leash and jolting the startled officer's arm. The girls let out a shrill shriek and ran away frantically while Falco continued to growl with his teeth bared and his pelt spiked. When they ran away, his pelt smoothed and his long pink tongue flopped lazily out of his mouth as he panted contently to himself. His handler was deeply confused at the dog's reaction, but I knew that Falco had understood and come to my defense. He was a kind and loyal K-9 whom I am glad and honored to have been able to work with before he was later retired and given a good home to live out his remaining years in peace. But I will never forget his reaction that day, so I offer one last thank you and good bye to a dear old friend.
